1. 1st Vice Foreign Minister Shin Kak-soo met with Nestor Popolizio Bardales, Peruvian Vice Foreign
Minister visiting Korea for the 2010 High-Level Forum on Korea-LAC (Latin America and Caribbean)
Partnership, on May 26 to discuss in depth Korea-Peru FTA negotiations; ways to expand energy and
resources cooperation; and the current situation on the Korean peninsula.
2. Speaking of the plan of Representative Lee Sang-deuk, who visited Peru in August 2009 in his capacity
as special envoy for economic cooperation, to revisit the country in early June to attend the completion
ceremony of a liquefied natural gas plant, Vice Minister Shin expected the visit to contribute to bolstering
substantive cooperation between Korea and Peru in resources, energy and infrastructure. Vice Minister
Popolizio responded that cooperation will be extended to help make Representative Lee’s Peruvian visit
a fruitful one.
3. Vice Minister Shin offered gratitude for the Peruvian government’s issuance of a statement on May 24
on the outcome of an international investigation team’s probe into the Cheonan incident and its support
for the Korean position.
4. The latest Korea-Peru Vice Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is seen to have served as an occasion for an
exploration of concrete ways to strengthen substantive cooperation between the two countries based
on the spirit of the comprehensive partnership, which the two countries’ leaders agreed to forge at their
summit meetings in November 2008 and November 2009.
